Bob has trained with, Norma Foster Sensei, Nanadan (7th Degree Black Belt) since 2000, attaining the rank of Sandan (3rd degree Black Belt) in Wado Ryu Karate and instructs Wado Ryu Karate in his dojo, Guseikai Karate Vancouver.

He has been training kids, teens and adults in Burnaby for the past 6 years and providing introductory Karate lessons as part of school outreach programs offered by, Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre, plus he teaches a Karate recreation program at Simon Fraser University (SFU) located at the Burnaby campus.

In 2005, Bob began training traditional Okinawan Kobudo under, William Chung Sensei at the Dunbar Community Centre in Ryukyu Kobudo Tesshinkan. Then, in 2011 he decided to follow Chung Sensei and joined Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan earning the rank of Shodan, awarded by Hiroshi Akamine Kaicho at the Honbu Shimbukan dojo in Okinawa in August 2013.

Traditional weapons are a big part of Bob's martial arts training and in 2011 he started Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido under the careful tutelage of, Farshad Ardestani Sensei at Yoshinkan Aikido located in Burnaby.

Bob seeks to understand other styles of traditional Karate such as Isshin-Ryu, Shorin- Ryu, Shito-Ryu and Tomari-te known as Okinawa Kempo, as well as; Aikido and traditional Jiu-jutsu attending seminars and workshops put on by acknowledged modern masters.

On August 4th, 2017,Bob Mooney was awarded the rank of Sandan by Akamine Hiroshi Sensei, the Kaicho for Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan.
