The Eku is a weapon that was derived from its functional use. Used by the fishermen of Okinawa, the Chief of the Yaeyama Island, Akahachi Oyakei was one of its earliest martial arts adapters. It is said that the Eku (or Kai in Japanese) holds a religious significance.
